How to Start a Riot

Lessons from the Acts Manifesto: A Christian leader recently said, everywhere the early Christians went they started a riot, everywhere I go they serve tea. The first Christians were in jail often, they stirred up deep unrest everywhere they went, including at least half a dozen riots. So why does following Jesus today look so tame? So domesticated? In a world where people are walking away from Christianity because it's seen as boring, maybe we can learn more from these early Christians than just correct doctrine. Maybe we should relearn how to start a riot.

Storybook Lives: The Jesus Way

Last year Mike began a series entitled "Storybook Lives."  Part One took us through the stories of the Old Testament that have shaped our faith.  This year, in Part Two (called "Storybook Lives: The Jesus Way"), we're focusing on the stories of Jesus -- the stories about him and the stories he told -- that have been foundational in forming us as God's people.

Some Great Ideas From Some Weird Christians

During the first half of September, 2008, Randy Harris spoke on a series of Wednesday nights about three people who have helped him explain and make sense of life: St. John of the Cross, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

Experiencing the Good News of Jesus Again

Beginning June 22, 2008, Mike shared four messages on the power of the story of Jesus- then and now.  Having just returned from a visit to the ancient city of Ephesus in Turkey, the series led us through the experience of the gospel in Ephesus through the visits of Paul (Acts 19, 20), the letter of Paul to the Christians in that city, and the letter to Ephesus in Revelation.

Finding God in the Stranger

"Welcome each other, just as Christ welcomed you." (Romans 15:7)

In May 2008, our entire church studied the importance of hospitality and welcoming strangers on our Christian journey together. At that point, for over a year we at Highland had been praying that God would make us into a more welcoming and hospitable people.

"They were all commended for their faith..." (Hebrews 11:39)

The Storybook Lives series began October 4, 2007. We explored the lives of many Old and New Testament characters who continue to teach us about faithful and obedient living as we answer the call of God.
