Spiritual Formation

“People need two sorts of relationships to grow: the divine and the human…No matter what the issue or struggle, relatedness must come first.” ~ Henry Cloud and John Townsend

“Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” ~ Matthew 9.35-36

“Jesus…he listened and knew how to respond in a way that would affect their hearts. There were no pat answers, no formulas, no one-time offers. He listened and taught us that the smallest element of any culture is an individual person. Each person is unique.” ~ Hugh Halter and Matt Smay

DISCERNMENT IN HOSPITALITY
When Jesus began his conversation with the woman at Jacob's well in Samaria, he could see beyond the words she spoke and the questions she asked of him. When she asked why he would speak with her, noting their religious and cultural differences, he could perceive a deeper concern within her heart and told her of the availability of "living water".

In Jerusalem, at the temple gate called Beautiful, Peter and John were preparing to enter the temple at the hour of prayer when they saw a lame man who was asking for money. They could see his real need, and by the power of the name of Jesus, Peter raised him up to walk. This response brought about not only "walking and leaping and praising God" in the life of the man who was healed, but those who saw him "were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him."

When we see someone who is in need, we may see an individual whose own perception is that their need is for food or clothing, a place to live, financial assistance, medication, or any number of other practical needs. Our responsibility is to use discernment in helping them see the deeper need in their life. We may provide a listening ear, friendship, or sometimes spiritual counsel. However, the primary need in each of our lives is a relationship with God. When we reach out in hospitality to others, the responsibility we must keep foremost in our heart is to seek to help them meet God.

May we allow spiritual discernment to open our eyes to see and find the heart-courage to respond!
